Birth Care
Birth care is individualized for each woman who comes to us for help during labor and birth. However, some things are the same for all women and babies. We are dedicated to high quality, respectful, safe care during your labor and birth. We will monitor your infants' heart tones regularly as well as your vital signs. We will do all we can to make you as comfortable as possible. We strive to keep the atmosphere relaxed and encouraging. We ask you to make sure everyone invited to help with your birth is supportive and in agreement with the way you have chosen to give birth. We will develop a birth plan with you in the latter weeks of your pregnancy to make sure we are all in agreement with your vision of an ideal birth. We have most things on hand at the birth center to make a supportive atmosphere such as:
- Tub to relax in
- Birth Ball/ Birth Stool
- Candles
- CD Player/ Relaxing CD's
- Cool drinks/ Popsicles/ Light Snacks
- Private Bathrooms
- Waiting rooms, extra beds for Family and Friends
- Towels/ Linens/Pads/Diapers etc..
We will provide you with a detailed list of things to bring and consider when planning for your birth. Most importantly, we give you our time and attention when you are in labor.
Prenatal Care
Prenatal visits are usually 30-45 minutes and there is time to listen to your issues and concerns. Each visit consists of checking your blood pressure, baby’s growth, position and heart rate, your weight gain, checking your urine for protein and glucose, and time to discuss your nutrition and activities. At some visits, we will obtain blood for testing. These procedures are similar to obstetrical care you would receive anywhere. Our visits are not rushed. We make time to review your lab work and other tests with you. The purpose of prenatal care is to identify problems that can be prevented. We give you guidance on optimal nutrition and ways to stay on the right track. We hope you will enjoy the prenatal care and guidance on your pregnancy that you receive at our Birth Center.
Well Woman Care
Bay Area Birth Center provides well woman care for women of all ages in need of pap smears, pelvic, and breast exams. We also provide routine lab testing such as CBC, glucose, cholesterol checks, glucose, and thyroid testing. We also provide referrals for ultrasounds, mammograms, chiropractic care, and other specialty services. We make recommendations for optimal health and nutrition. Our fee for a well woman exam includes an overall exam, B/P check, pelvic exam, pap smear, and CBC. We usually spend about 45 minutes with you and make sure all your questions are answered.
Home Visits
We make home visits at day two for all our clients to check on the mom and baby. At these visits, we do a newborn screen, weight check, jaundice check, breastfeeding assessment, and assess how the mom is recuperating from birth. We enjoy seeing moms at home in order for them to adjust more easily in those first few days. We also speak to you by phone most every day in that first week after the baby is born.
Breastfeeding Assistance
We are strong advocates of breastfeeding and do all we can to support moms to be successful. Moms having their baby at our birth center will have assistance and encouragement to breastfeed their babies starting from their very first hour of birth. We make sure moms and babies are off to a good start before leaving the birth center. After going home, we speak to you by phone and at a home visit to ensure breastfeeding is going well. If you develop problems such as sore nipples or engorgement, we have several suggestions that may help. We have many books and information pamphlets about breastfeeding. We also host Leche League meetings once a month at our Birth Center. Jackie Griggs is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
Payments and Insurance- Babies Can be Affordable!
Bay Area Birth Center offers a comprehensive, affordable alternative to traditional, hospital-based maternity care. Birth Center care costs approximately 30% less than hospital care for a normal, vaginal birth. Care is more personal, and more time is spent with you during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum time.
If you are insured, we will be happy to help you find out what your maternity care benefits are. We work with the Midwife’s Billing Service. They help us, and you, to get your insurance to pay the maximum amount possible. They are specialists in billing and coding for out of hospital birthing. We submit your claims for you. If you call the office, we can take your information and call you back with information about the amount of your insurance deductible, and the percentage of our services they will cover. Most insurance companies typically pay about $1500 more for using our licensed birth center instead of having a home birth.
If you are not insured, we usually give a 10% discount for cash pre-paid service, and work out a payment plan with you. We also give a discount for repeat clients.
We don’t believe insurance companies should dictate how and where women give birth and we are committed to helping you get the maternity care you desire. Over the years, we’ve become very good at getting payment for Birth Center services. Please let us help you to know how to work with your insurance company.
